So much talk all winter, spring and early summer about the state of the Mets’ bullpen for 2020 - yet did anyone even mention Justin Wilson?

The lefty’s 1.91 second-half ERA last season was largely overlooked among the glaring failures of Edwin Diaz and Jeurys Familia as well as the remarkable dominance of Seth Lugo, yet there was Wilson on Friday in the season opener, working the eighth inning of a 1-0 game - the very spot for which the Mets seemingly went and signed Dellin Betances.

And, oh by the way, also getting the biggest out of the game: Wilson struck out Braves’ star Ronald Acuna Jr. with the tying run at second base to end the inning.

The bigger story was Diaz getting a relatively stress-free save - other than Freddie Freeman yanking a 3-0 fastball foul into the upper deck - and offering the Mets hope that he can regain his 2018 form as an elite closer.

But Wilson’s appearance certainly made for some intrigue: setting aside Lugo, who pitched the sixth and the seventh in an Andrew Miller-like wild card role, if Wilson is the primary set-up man, it could be evidence this could be the deepest bullpen in baseball.

Or it could also mean the Mets aren’t so sure that Betances is still the strikeout monster who made the All-Star team four times as a Yankee.

Call it To Be Determined.

Luis Rojas did have Betances warming up in the top of the seventh when the game was still tied at 0-0, but when the Mets went ahead on Yoenis Cespedes’ bottom-of-the-seventh home run, Wilson immediately took over throwing in the pen.

Meanwhile, I haven’t even mentioned the slimmed-down Familia, who showed promising signs in spring and summer training of regaining his once-dominant form.

The point is the Mets think they have the type of bullpen quality and depth with which championships are won.

They have a long way to go to prove such a notion, especially after Diaz and Familia essentially wrecked the season in 2019, so we’ll see. And it’s worth noting there is less margin for error in 2020 because their injury-plagued starting rotation looms as merely mediocre after Jacob deGrom at No. 1.

In any case, if it turns out the Mets have five reliable relievers, Rojas would have a myriad of options on a near-daily basis. And while he said Friday that ideally he’d like to have one primary closer, he also indicated he understands he doesn’t have the luxury of giving anyone a long leash in this 60-game season.

Diaz is obviously getting the first crack, and his outing Friday was a good first step back from last season. Rojas insisted Diaz has earned his spot, saying, “We’re going with him because of what he shown us this year, in the spring and again (in Summer Camp).”

Perhaps, but it’s hard to imagine the Mets weren’t going to give Diaz another opportunity to be the closer they thought they were getting from the Mariners. And for one game, anyway, the right-hander looked more like that guy, getting two strikeouts and a soft liner sandwiched around a walk to Freeman.

Perhaps most importantly, Diaz had better command of his slider, the pitch that was such a problem for him last year. He got ahead 0-2 on Marcell Ozuna with it to set up a strikeout-looking at a 97-mph fastball, then got Matt Adams to swing at a slider at his ankles to end the game.

Diaz said he worked carefully to Freeman - though the 3-0 fastball nearly cost him - with a plan in mind.

“The next guys up were more free-swingers,” he said, speaking of Ozuna and Adams.

He’s not wrong about that, so it seemed to be a good sign that Diaz was thinking clearly on the mound, perhaps rid of the aftershocks from 2019.

“He looked like the Sugar we know,” said Rojas, referring to Diaz’s nickname.

Again, there is plenty of proving to be done, but if the right-hander can re-establish himself as a strong closer, while Wilson, Betances, and Familia form a dependable set-up corp, that could further the argument the Mets should stretch out Lugo to start.

His two innings in relief of deGrom on Friday were vital, but soon deGrom will be going deep into games, and then the question is whether Lugo has more value pitching six, even seven innings as a starter, or being a multi-inning reliever two or three times a week.

With that in mind, Marcus Stroman on Friday indicated he won’t be out long with what he called a calf strain (the Mets call it a torn muscle), but calf injuries are notoriously slow-healing, so it remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, what’s really needed at the moment is a No. 2 starter, something Lugo has the ability to provide. After all, a deep bullpen won’t be as effective if the Mets are down 5-3 in the sixth inning too often.

So a lot is still to be determined. But at least for one game, Wilson’s reminder of the job he did last year, along with Diaz’s lockdown ninth inning offered the Mets reason to believe their bullpen could be as effective in 2020 as it was inept in 2019.

Which would be quite a feat.
