Mets manager Buck Showalter had some promising updates on his catcher James McCann and reliever Trevor May prior to Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“He’s right where he needs to be,” Showalter said of May. “He’s doing good.”

On May 4, the Mets announced that the reliever had been shut down for approximately four weeks and was facing a likely recovery time of eight-to-12 weeks to return to game action.

In 8.1 innings over eight appearances for the Mets this season, May has an 8.64 ERA (6.11 FIP) and 1.92 WHIP.

As for McCann, Showalter said that the veteran catcher will start doing some dry swings in the next couple of days and that he’s “coming along really well.”

“There’s nothing negative going on with any of those guys. They are all progressing so at some point we’ll get them,” Showalter added.

McCann was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 13 after an X-ray revealed a fracture of his left hamate. The Mets announced that the typical recovery for this injury is six weeks. As long as he keeps progressing, McCann should rejoin the team in about a month.

The 31-year-old backstop has been struggling at the plate this season, though. He owns a slash line of .196/.266/.286 with one homer and six RBI.

Tomas Nido, on the other hand, has filled in nicely for McCann in an expanded role on the team.

As of June 4, Nido is batting .400 (8-20) with five runs, a double, three RBI, two walks with a .905 OPS in his last seven games. Over his last 16 games, he is batting .298 (14-47) with five runs, two doubles, five RBI, four walks with a .353 OBP.
