On Wednesday, the Mets placed Brandon Nimmo on the 10-day IL retroactive to May 3 with a left index finger bone bruise.

Nimmo is eligible to return on May 13, and he spoke to reporters on Thursday about his progress as he hopes to return once the 10 days are up.

He injured the finger against the Phillies on May 1 after fouling a ball away. The 28-year-old is slashing .318/.430/.439 this season with one home run, eight RBI, and seven runs scored.

Nimmo was also asked about teammate Francisco Lindor's current struggles at the plate.

"It's very difficult, that's why this game is so important to be mentally strong because there are going to be times like this where you do go through huge struggles," Nimmo said. "I really think that Francisco has handled this to the best as I can see. From what we're seeing on the outside and just talking with him, he's still very positive and still rooting for the team, and still trying to win ball games, and knows it'll come around.

"I think that's what we're trying to continue to lift him up with, nothing to prove to us. New teammates, new city, new team, new coaches, everything is brand new. He has nothing to prove to us, we know what kind of work he puts in and what kind of player he is and we are confident the numbers will be there at the end of the year regardless of this start.

"Someone like me can speak from experience, I did the same exact thing, whatever it was like 1-for-26 with 15 strikeouts. It is hard to overcome, but you have to keep reminding yourself that this is baseball and you are going to fail. And to keep grinding and trusting the process and it will come around because 162 games is a long time. We only finished one month, and we didn't even get to play all the games in that one month. We really have so much of the season left. This one month could just be a little blip if the rest of the season goes a different way."
