While the Mets continued to slide this week, one bright spot for New York this season has been the steady rise of outfielder Brandon Nimmo and his prowess at the plate. Not only did Nimmo end the week by collecting his 10th home run of the season -- all in 168 at-bats -- he did so in spectacular fashion with a two-run, go-ahead shot with two outs in the ninth inning to help lift the Mets over the first-place D-backs. Nimmo is now hitting .274 on the season to go along with a .402 OBP. Time will tell whether the Mets can ride some of that momentum into their upcoming series against the struggling Rockies.
Beyond certain Nimmo heroics, other Mets news of note includes the fact that Jacob deGrom's lack of run support this season has gotten to be historic. Following the 2-0 loss to the Braves in Atlanta on Wednesday, deGrom became the first pitcher since Randy Johnson in 1999 to make five straight starts of 7+ innings pitched while allowing two runs or fewer, only to see his team lose each contest. The Mets also promoted top first base prospect Peter Alonso to Triple-A during the week. Meanwhile, Wilmer Flores and Jeurys Familia returned from the disabled list, with Ty Kelly and Jacob Rhame being optioned back to the Minors.
The Yankees enjoyed a busy week at home, which included Old-Timers' Day festivities on Father's Day this year. As injuries and ineffectiveness mount in the starting rotation, Andy Martino took a look at some trade candidates for the Bombers this summer, including J.A. Happ of the Blue Jays. Other names floating around the rumor mill include Cole Hamels and Michael Fulmer. The Yankees are currently carrying two rookies in their rotation in Domingo German and Jonathan Loaisiga. The latter tossed five scoreless innings in his debut Friday. Meanwhile, Sonny Gray has continued to struggle at Yankee Stadium, and did so this week. It was revealed this week that the Yankees plan to hold onto their top trade chips, including Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar, while the front office assesses the market for said pitching help.
NFL
Former Jets QB Christian Hackenberg was cut by the Raiders on Tuesday. Now, the 2016 second-round draft pick has been linked to the Patriots as a possible landing spot. Meanwhile, Jets WR Robby Anderson doesn't think he will face a suspension by the league for being arrested twice in the past ninths, according to NJ.com's Darryl Slater. Perhaps the biggest news out of Jets camp this week was the hinting that Sam Darnold has a legitimate chance to be the team's starting quarterback for the Week 1 matchup against the Lions.
The good news for the Giants this week was that Odell Beckham Jr. was cleared to practice as he works his way back from a nasty ankle injury. Also positive news is the fact that Beckham Jr. closed out the week by notifying the media that he will not be holding out this year, and thus will be reporting to training camp on time.
NBA
The Knicks continued their preparation for the 2018 NBA Draft by meeting with forward Michael Porter Jr. in Chicago on Friday. The 6-foot-10 Porter missed most of last season due to microdiscectomy surgery of the L3-L4 spinal discs in November. New York was also linked to superstar Kawhi Leonard during the week, as the forward reportedly wants out of San Antonio. Salary totals could be a potential problem here as New York currently has $99.9 million in committed salary for next year. That total drops to $64.2 million for the 2019-20 season.
NHL
Like the Knicks, the Rangers have been preparing for their upcoming draft with the league confirming that they will be selecting at No. 9 during Friday's NHL Draft. Other first round picks of the Rangers include No. 26 and No. 28 overall. It remains to be seen whether or not New York will try to move up at this year's draft. Islanders fans will be happy to know that the team has been focused on coming to an agreement with captain John Tavares on a contract extension all week, according to a source. Tavares appeared to approve of the Islanders' decision to hire Lou Lamoriello earlier on, and both men have admiration for each other.
MLS
NYCFC had off last week. Next up, the Pigeons will host Toronto FC. The Red Bulls beat the Sounders on Wednesday, 2-1, before falling to the Union by a score of 2-1 on Saturday. The Metros play FC Dallas this weekend at Red Bulls Arena.
