The Mets brought in another vetearn infielder this offseason, signing Jed Lowrie to a two-year deal on Thursday, SNY's Andy Martino confirmed.

According to Martino, the deal is worth $20 million over the two years for the 34-year-old.

Lowrie had his first All-Star season in 2018, with a .267/.353/.448 slash line, a career-high 23 homers and 99 RBI over 157 games with the Oakland A's.

This is an interesting signing by GM Brodie Van Wagenen, who used to represent the super utility infielder. He brought in INF J.D. Davis via trade with the Astros over the weekend to deepen the team's infield depth.

Now, with Lowrie, the Mets have a logjam of sorts with Jeff McNeil, Todd Frazier, Robinson Cano, and Amed Rosario among the infielders on the roster to go along with the new faces. Top prospect Peter Alonso is also expected to be a top contender to crack the Opening Day roster at first base.

Lowrie, though, can play anywhere in the infield, making him extremely versatile for the Mets. He has played mostly in the middle infield positions (508 games at shortstop, 412 games at second base), and also has 145 games at third as well as 11 at first base. At the plate, his versatility is even greater with his ability to switch-hit.

No matter what the Mets have planned for their infield, they now have a weapon in Lowrie they can deploy on any given night, which is always good to have on the roster.
