The Mets were desperate for a win on Wednesday, and they got it. But in classic Mets fashion, it didn’t come easily.
The Mets trailed 3-0 before they even recorded an out – then, the game was suspended for 21 hours. They had had two more three-run deficits when the game resumed on Wednesday.
But they chipped away with timely hits and snapped a four-game losing streak – and it was their best offensive performance in quite some time.
“These guys are resilient,” manager Luis Rojas said. “They always think they’re gonna come back in the game, but this is the one piece that they were missing, and it was good to see it.”
The Mets had scored just three runs in their previous four games before scoring eight in Tuesday/Wednesday’s game.
“It shows who we are as an offensive team. I know we haven’t shown up to be like this offensively, but these guys have hit like this in their careers," Rojas said. "It’s just good to see some of the good swings that these guys are putting there repeatedly. Whether it’s a swing and miss, whether it’s a foul ball, or whether it’s a ball that’s hard hit in play, we saw a lot of that. I like the conviction behind the swings that we took out there today. It was good to see that repeatedly.”
Rojas said the eight runs were a product of the grind the players have gone through.
“Just connect quality at-bats and hard contacts one after the other," he said. "These guys can do that, and we’ve always trusted that they could, and it’s just been tough to watch at times, just for the number of days that we weren’t doing what we did tonight. … It’s just great to see, so we just gotta keep believing in it, that that’s what we are and just gotta keep going game to game with the same approach. I loved it.”
It wasn’t just the bats, though, that were manufacturing runs. Jeff McNeil scored from first on a single, and Jonathan Villar’s sacrifice bunt turned into an error and a run.
“Just a lot of good things. We made an error, we had an error on the bases, but the guys came back and made some good plays that gave us a chance to win. And it’s nice to see. This is what we’ve done for the most part this year, is just fight and find our way into really, really big wins. We have several. … We have a lot of big wins, this is one of them. I think it just shows who we are.”
Wednesday’s nightcap was postponed to Thursday, but if the Mets can steal a couple more wins, they can erase a lot of negativity they’ve experienced over the last several days.
