Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history who faced the Jets in Super Bowl III, died Monday morning. He was 90 years old.

Shula played with the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Colts and Washington Redskins during the 1950s, but gained his Hall of Fame status as a head coach with a 347-173-6 record.

During a 33-year head coaching career beginning in 1963, he coached the Colts -- who lost to Joe Namath and the Jets in 1969 -- and the Dolphins, which included Miami's 1972 perfect season. He retired in 1995.

"Don Shula was the patriarch of the Miami Dolphins for 50 years," the team said in a statement about the two-time Super Bowl champion. "He brought the winning edge to our franchise and put the Dolphins and the city of Miami in the national sports scene. Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Mary Anne along with his children Dave, Donna, Sharon, Anne and Mike."

Shula was also at the helm in Miami during The Mud Bowl, when the Dolphins bested the Jets, 14-0, in the AFC title game. The Jets also expressed their condolences on Twitter.
