LB Alec Ogletree on Giants: 'We can be one of the best teams in the league'

Giants are confident despite limited expectations in 2019

Heading into the season, many people outside the Giants organization might say that the most compelling storyline is if and when Eli Manning turns over the starting quarterback reins to Daniel Jones

But don't tell that to anyone inside the locker room, where you'll find players who appear to be brimming with confidence as the team prepares to open up the season against the Cowboys.

"We feel like we're a better team than we were a year ago," head coach Pat Shurmur said. "I like the way we've built our team. I like some of the personnel changes we've made. I think we're a better football team now - and this is a team sport."

Despite trading key players like Odell Beckham Jr. and Damon Harrison Sr., along with the loss of free agent Landon Collins, the Giants believe they have the right personnel to make some noise in 2019 and surprise some people.

"Nobody's giving us a chance, but we have to play to our standards and do what we know we can do," linebacker Alec Ogletree said. "We can be one of the best teams in the league."

"There's a lot of guys in here that might not have big names, but there's a lot of talent in this room," tight end Evan Engram added.

Ogletree and Engram are two players who the Giants will need big seasons from if they want to acheive their lofty goals for the season. Ogletree has been a defensive leader since he signed with the Giants last season, and was named a captain by the Giants for the second straight year.

Engram, meanwhile, enters his third season with the Giants hoping to make the leap to an elite tight end. He was hampered by injuries last season, playing in just 11 games (eight starts).

But Eli and the Giants have always been at their best when they get quality contributions from the tight end position. With a depleted wide receiver corps, Big Blue will need an even bigger year from Engram if they want to contend in 2019.
