When it comes to the Giants' roster, Dave Gettleman has made it a point to eliminate what he perceives as "distractions."

The general manager and former safety Landon Collins appear to have different definitions of the word.

Collins, now with NFC East rival Washington, told ESPN's Jordan Raanan the reason he, Olivier Vernon and Odell Beckham Jr. were not brought back because they provided too much of a presence in the locker room.

"All we wanted to do was win, and we spoke up because we had to get them to listen to us," Collins told Raanan. "We had to get them to get us winning pieces to help us at least be contenders.

"I think we were too vocal, and that platform was bigger than the Giants, you know, and our words stood out more. And ... if it's not good media, they don't want that kind of media."

After another losing season, Gettleman set his sights on what Collins called a "culture change," and Collins did not feel included in those plans.

The Giants shipped Vernon and Beckham to Cleveland during the offseason in separate deals. Gettleman let Collins walk when free agency began -- they didn't even make an offer, Collins said. In addition, Gettleman and Collins basically never even spoke during the year-plus they overlapped in New York.

"I wish he'd say something. Try to," Collins said. "I mean, he had come around, shake your hand, say 'Good job, big fella,' or something like that. But honestly, talking to him, or saying anything, having a full conversation or anything with him, nothing.

"I mean, he basically ... I don't know him, he don't know me, that's kind of how it just kind of was."

Collins went on to sign a six-year deal worth up to $84 million with the Redskins. With those bigger personalities gone, Gettleman got his wish. What he's given Collins, who will now be on the other side of the field twice a year, is a massive chip on his shoulder.

"I'm on a team that loves me and wanted me here," Collins said. "I think the Giants are going in a different direction with the guys they want, and they feel as though they work better for their scheme.

"I'm gonna circle [Giants games] for the next six years. Next six."

This is not the first time Collins has publicly chastised his former team publicly. He was surprised Gettleman took Daniel Jones with the No. 6 overall pick, which allowed Washington to scoop up Dwayne Haskins 15th overall, and also defended Beckham earlier this offseason. He did so again Tuesday.

"He was as a person and as a brother to me, and a brother to everyone in the locker room, he made sure everybody in the locker room was smiling ... and he went out there to work, each and every day. He didn't say nothing when he came to play in a football game. He didn't say nothing when he came to practice. All he wanted to do was win."

During his Giants career, Collins played four seasons (59 games) with 437 total tackles, eight interceptions and 32 passes defended.
