Jordan Montgomery will start for the Yankees on Tuesday night against the Rays in Tampa, becoming the latest pitcher to take on that role for them this season.

Chad Green (14 times), Nestor Cortes Jr. (once), and Jonathan Holder (once) have also served as openers this season for the Yanks.

Montgomery recently returned from Tommy John surgery and has made one appearance so far this season, allowing three runs in 2.0 innings against the Blue Jays on Sept. 15.

Using an opener is something that could be in play for the Yankees in the postseason, with James Paxton and Masahiro Tanaka seemingly the only two starting pitchers who are penciled in to the ALDS rotation at the moment.

Luis Severino returned on Sept. 17 after missing the entire season to that point, and has fired 9.0 scoreless innings over two starts since coming back -- going 4.0 innings in his first start and 5.0 in his second.

While Severino will likely be on a pitch count and/or innings-per-start limit at least early on in the playoffs, it's fair to believe he is in position to be in the Yankees' ALDS rotation.

The question of the fourth starter remains an open one, with the Yankees expected to be without Domingo German for the remainder of the regular season and entire postseason due to his violation of the MLB/MLBPA domestic violence policy.
