Joe Schoen discusses Daniel Jones' Giants future entering make-or-break year

Speaking on Wednesday as he was officially introduced as the Giants' new GM, Joe Schoen discussed Daniel Jones, who is entering Year 4 in a likely make-or-break situation.

But Schoen did praise Jones, whose presence he said will be a big factor when building the offense this offseason.

"I've looked at Daniel, and once the new staff gets in here we're gonna get together -- offensive coordinator, head coach, the entire staff -- dive into the film as a group and look at what Daniel does best," Schoen said. "And we're gonna try to allow him to put his best foot forward.

"I've looked at him. I wasn't here in the past, so I don't exactly know what he was told to do. But I do know this -- I know he's a great kid. He's been in this building the last two days. I've talked to him. There's not anybody in this building that has said a bad word about his work ethic, passion, desire to win. I think you've got to have those traits as a quarterback."

As far as Jones' physical ability, Schoen was bullish.

"He's got arm strength, he's athletic, he can run," Schoen said. "So I'm really excited to work with Daniel. And again, when the new staff gets in here, we'll build an offense around Daniel to accentuate what he does best."

Schoen also said fixing the offensive line in front of Jones would be a huge priority.

"If you want to see Daniel Jones put his best foot forward, he's got to be on his feet," Schoen told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano. "If you want to see what Saquon (Barkley) can do, it would be nice if we could block guys."

Giants co-owner John Mara had a scrum with reporters shortly after Schoen's news conference wrapped up, and he was blunt about the less than advantageous position the team had put Jones in during his first three seasons.

Since being drafted No. 6 overall in 2018, Jones has played for two head coaches and offensive systems and is about to have to a third coach and system.

"We do feel Daniel can play," Mara said. "We’ve done everything possible to screw this kid up."

Mara added that the Giants need to fix the situation around Jones and then make an "intelligent evaluation" about him.

The Giants have not yet picked up Jones' fifth-year option.
