Nick Chubb is one of the best running backs in the NFL, but if you ask him, he’s the reason the Jets beat the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

A lot of things had to go right for the Jets -- or wrong, if you're the Browns -- for New York to score 14 points in under two minutes en route to a 31-30 victory. And one of those was Chubb actually scoring instead of giving himself up to keep the clock running.

"I probably shouldn’t have scored right there honestly, looking back at it," Chubb said Tuesday. "It cost us the game. A lot of things went wrong. Not just one thing, but collectively as a unit, as a team, we could’ve all done things different, but I mean, it’s only a problem because we didn’t win, so I probably should’ve went down."

With 1:55 left in the fourth quarter, Chubb could have fallen down between the one and two-yard lines to give his team a fresh set of downs. Without any timeouts, there was no way for the Jets to stop the clock and Cleveland would have come away with the victory.

Instead, he made a Jets defender miss and scampered into the end zone, and the Browns took a 30-17 lead.

"The first down marker was at the one or two and the goal line was right there too and I probably could’ve got down. It probably would’ve been third and short, third and inches, but I mean I couldn’t went out of bounds because people were behind me," Chubb added. "They would’ve pushed me in or something like that. Probably should’ve just dropped down after I made the cut."

"They scored and the echo on the [coaches'] headset was that they gave us a chance, let’s see what happens,’" head coach Robert Saleh said Monday of Chubb’s touchdown. "I’ve never been so happy for a missed tackle in my life."

Chubb, honestly, is being a bit hard on himself. Yes, taking the knee would have guaranteed a victory, but kicker Cade York missed the ensuing extra point, Amari Cooper could not recover the onside kick that gave New York life, and the Browns’ defense gave up a long touchdown to Corey Davis and let the Joe Flacco-led offense march down the field to take the lead, so it’s not all on him.

But those are the breaks in the NFL, and the Jets and their fans will take the win. The team now has a 1-1 record and will host the surprisingly 0-2 Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3.
