The Jets are hiring Denver Broncos assistant GM Darren Mougey as their next general manager, the team announced Saturday.

After an extensive search following the dismissal of longtime GM Joe Douglas, the Jets have pegged Mougey to lead the next chapter of the Jets front office.

"Darren is a trusted NFL executive who has experience working with an impressive collection of football leaders," Jets chairman Woody Johnson said in a statement. "He is a proven talent evaluator who impressed us with his vision for this team. His partnership with Coach Glenn will revitalize this organization. I am proud of the thorough search we undertook and that it led us to the two best individuals to lead our football team going forward."

"It is one of the great honors and privileges of my life to serve as the general manager of the New York Jets," Mougey said. "I want to thank Mr. Johnson for this responsibility, one I do not take lightly. I could not be more excited to work alongside Coach Glenn to build a championship team that will make Jets fans proud."

Mougey, 39, got his start as a passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at San Diego State before becoming a scouting intern with the Broncos, where he quickly climbed the ranks. He held various roles in the organization's scouting department from 2013-2020 before being promoted to assistant director of college scouting. He made another leap just one year later, earning the title of director of player personnel.

Mougey was promoted to assistant general manager to George Paton in 2022, when he helped Denver's front office build a roster that made the postseason for the first time since winning it all in 2015.

The Jets met with three candidates for second interviews, Mougey being one of them along with Washington Commanders assistant GM Lance Newmark and Cincinnati Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown.

With the hiring of Mougey, he'll now be tasked with helping turn around a team that went 5-12 this past season. The Jets have the seventh pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and Mougey, new head coach Aaron Glenn and the rest of the organization will also have decisions to make on a number of free agent players, which includes D.J. Reed and Morgan Moses.
