GM Joe Douglas added another former Raven to his roster, agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with LB Patrick Onwuasor, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed on Wednesday.
Affectionately known as "Peanut," Onwuasor adds linebacker depth for Gregg Williams' defense that saw his first-teamers C.J. Mosley and Avery Williamson rarely on the field in 2019. Williamson was lost in the preseason to a torn ACL, and Mosley constantly battled a groin injury that forced him to miss 14 games in his first year with the Jets.
Coming out of Arizona in 2016, Onwuasor went undrafted and Baltimore picked him up. He earned his spot on the team and quickly assumed a larger role one year later.
Onwuasor had 90 tackles, two passes defended and one fumble recovery in 16 games (13 starts) in 2017, and followed that up with 5.5 sacks, 59 tackles and two forced fumbles in 2018.
Last season, though, his role was diminished despite Mosley leaving. He played in 14 games with six starts, totaling 64 tackles and three sacks.
With Jordan Jenkins returning and hopefully Mosley and Williamson getting more time on the field next season, Onwuasor will be a great depth piece for Williams to work with.
