As SNY's Ralph Vacchiano suggested in the past when Darnold was initially injured, it wouldn't be fair to the third-year signal caller if he were to come back not 100 percent. At this point, the Jets are evaluating whether or not he is the man to lead the franchise for years down the road, with a top 2021 NFL Draft pick in sights at the moment.
So, as Gase said, the Jets will be cautious with him and watch the pain levels while he throws.
Joe Flacco has been starting in place of Darnold recently, and it hasn't been pleasant over the past two games. The offense couldn't muster anything against the Miami Dolphins, putting up a goose egg last week. And the Arizona Cardinals made it hard for Gase's crew the week prior.
With the division-leading Buffalo Bills on the schedule for this week, the Jets would love to see their starting quarterback on the field. More time on the practice field, though, will show Gase what to expect at that position come Sunday.
