Mets third baseman J.D. Davis confirmed that he'll have offseason hand surgery on Tuesday, Oct. 5 to repair a ligament between his middle and ring fingers on his left hand.
Davis spoke to reporters on the field prior to the team's final game of the regular season against the Atlanta Braves and discussed his surgery.
"Yeah I'm planning surgery on Tuesday, flying out tomorrow on Monday to over to Dayton, and Dr. Graham is gonna be doing the surgery and we'll go from there," Davis said.
Davis was placed on the IL on Sept. 26, ending a season in which he played just 73 games while slashing .285/.384/.436 with five homers and 23 RBI.
"I've always said that it kind of bothered me, and here and there would flare up," Davis said. "It is what it is, I tried to gut it out. The team needed me, and I just tried to play games under the circumstance and sometimes I guess it doesn't come through."
The 28-year-old also touched on his future with the Mets, as he's set to hit arbitration this offseason. Davis is currently on a one-year deal worth $2.1 million and is arbitration eligible through 2024.
"It's kind of 50/50, kind of a flip of the coin," Davis said. "I know there's going to be plenty of changes up and down from front office down to here. But again, I've always told you it's out of my control or anything like that. But from my gut feeling, I could be out of here, that's where it's kind of leaning towards.
"There is a possibility that I could come back. I love New York, love the fans, love the city. So I don't know, it's a flip of the coin."
Davis has hit .288 with 33 home runs, 43 doubles, and 99 RBI over 269 games with the Mets in three seasons. His best year came in 2019 when he batted .307 with 22 homers and 22 doubles in 140 games.
