The Islanders announced Thursday that Anders Lee has been named team captain, becoming the 15th captain in franchise history.

Lee replaces John Tavares, who left for the Maple Leafs as a free agent during the offseason.

"It's extremely humbling, quite an honor to be a captain of this organization," Lee said. "It's definitely one of the most special things that's happened in my hockey career."

Head coach Barry Trotz weighed in on the selection of Lee.

"When I first got the opportunity to coach the Islanders, we talked to every player," Trotz said. "It was clear as day to me that Anders would be the fifteenth captain of the Islanders."

The alternate captains will be Josh Bailey, Cal Clutterbuck, and Andrew Ladd.

The 28-year-old Lee, who is an unrestricted free agent after the season, tallied a career-best 40 goals and 22 assists last season for the Isles while playing in all 82 games. His 2017-18 campaign followed a season in 2016-17 that saw Lee notch 34 goals and 18 assists in 81 games.

A native of Minnesota, Lee was selected by the Islanders in the sixth round (151st overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft. He has played in 343 games during his five-year NHL career, racking up 124 goals and 83 assists.

Lee will earn $5 million this season during what is the final year of the four-year, $15 million deal he signed prior to the 2015-16 season.
