The Islanders have decided to move on from head coach Lane Lambert after the team's disappointing start to the season.

Patrick Roy, who last coached in the NHL for the Colorado Avalanche from 2013-2016, has been named Lambert's replacement. Roy finished his tenure in Colorado with a record of 130-92-24 and won the Jack Adams Award in 2013-14 for Coach of the Year.

New York remains well in the mix in the Metropolitan Division with plenty of season to go, but the team has greatly underperformed after scratching its way to a fourth-place finish and a spot in the playoffs last year.

They've been plenty good at getting ahead in games, but their biggest issue is keeping leads, as they've been greatly outscored in the third period and have blown multiple two-goal advantages.

Fans have long been calling for a change behind the bench, and President/General Manager Lou Lamoriello finally decided he's also seen enough.

Lambert spent four seasons as an assistant coach on the Island, before taking over the head man duties for long-time Isles and Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz prior to the 2022 season.

Despite making the playoffs in his first year at the helm, the 59-year-old lasted just a season and a half and compiled an overall record of 61-46-20 as the head coach.
