The Padres, who were in touch with the Mets in late-July about trading for Noah Syndergaard, are a team to watch when it comes to a potential offseason trade of Syndergaard or Jacob deGrom, according to SNY's Andy Martino.

If the Mets choose to move deGrom or Syndergaard, the Padres -- who have a loaded farm system that most consider the best in baseball -- would be a perfect match.

DeGrom is the best pitcher in baseball right now, and should net more than the Rays recently got for Chris Archer (Austin Meadows, Tyler Glasnow, and a PTBNL). Syndergaard would likely net a bit less than deGrom. And with the Padres not ready to contend, trading for Zack Wheeler probably doesn't make sense for them.

Here are some of the Padres minor leaguers (with their MLB Top 100 Prospect rankings in parenthesis) the Mets could target if they put Jake and/or Thor on the market...

Double-A SS Fernando Tatis Jr. (No. 2)

Tatis, 19, is MLB.com's second-best prospect in baseball, behind only Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He is hitting .286/.355/.507 with 16 homers, 22 doubles, and four triples in 88 games this season for Double-A while playing as one of the youngest players in the league.

"Tatis Jr. has all the ingredients to become an offensive force in the Majors, as his bat speed, leveraged swing and overall capacity to make adjustments all portend a future plus hitter with plus power," MLB.com writes in their recent scouting report.

Tatis should be a must from the Padres in any deal for deGrom, and should be their first ask in any deal for Syndergaard.

Low-A LHP Mackenzie Gore (No. 11)

The 19-year old Gore is the highest-ranked LHP prospect by MLB.com but is probably a few years away from the majors. He has a 3.75 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 64 strikeouts in 48 innings (13 starts) this season.

"Padres officials are quick to praise Gore's competitiveness and overall aptitude on the mound, believing that those qualities, along with his potential for four above-average-or-better offerings, could make the young lefty a future front-of-the-rotation piece," according to MLB.com.

It's hard to see the Mets getting Tatis and Gore in a deal for deGrom, but it can't hurt to try. It almost certainly won't happen in a deal for Syndergaard. In a more likely scenario, it's Tatis or Gore, plus perhaps some of the players below.

Triple-A C/OF Francisco Mejia (No. 21)

The Padres just acquired the switch-hitting Mejia from the Indians in the Brad Hand trade.

Mejia, 22, hit .279/.328/.426 with seven homers in 79 games for the Indians' Tirple-A affiliate before being traded.

MLB.com notes that Mejia remains mostly behind the plate for now, and has a natural hitting ability that is "aggressive" but "generates consistently hard contact to all fields."

Triple-A 2B/SS Luis Arias (No. 22)

Arias, 21, is hitting .270/.380/.402 with seven homers in 98 games this season in Triple-A. MLB.com calls him "one of the more accomplished hitters in the minors," citing his advanced knowledge of the strike zone as one of his key attributes.

While he's at shortstop for now, hs might wind up at second base when he reaches the majors.

High-A LHP Adrian Morejon (NR)

The 19-year-old Morejon has top-of-the-rotation potential and "induces a ton of ground balls and can also miss a lot of bats with an advanced three-pitch mix," according to RotoGraphs.

Morejon has a 3.50 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 73 strikeouts in 64.1 innings (13 starts) this season.

Rookie level SS Xavier Edwards (NR)

The Padres picked the switch-hitting, 18-year-old Edwards with their second-round pick in June's MLB Draft. According to RotoGraphs, he is "an electric player with plus-plus speed and an advanced feel for the bat."

His scouting report notes that he doesn't profile as a home run hitter, but that he could hit near the top of the order while providing above average up-the-middle defense.

Edwards is hitting .377/.458/.443 with 11 stolen bases in 17 games this season in Rookie Level ball.
