Now that the Jets and incoming head coach Adam Gase have agreed on a contract, one of the main priorities will be for him to fill out his coaching staff. Let's consider who could be candidates for a job:
Offense
Gase is expected to retain play-calling duties as he did throughout his time in Miami, so whoever the Jets bring in as the new offensive coordinator will have more of an implementation role.
Soon after news broke that Gase was hired, it was reported that Dowell Loggains could be headed to the Jets as his offensive coordinator. Loggains is seen as his right-hand man, having been the quarterbacks coach when Gase was the offensive coordinator for the Bears in 2015, and the Dolphins' offensive coordinator under Gase last season.
Loggains remains the favorite for the role, although he's reportedly also in the mix for Gase's old job as Miami head coach. Ironically, when Gase left Chicago to take the Miami job, Loggains was promoted into his old role there, too.
In the event Loggains is not an option, you might expect the Jets to target Todd Monken, given that this is who they reportedly wanted Matt Rhule to hire as his offensive coordinator had he been offered the head coaching position. However, it seems this was specific to Rhule because they knew he lacked NFL experience, and perhaps didn't have the resources and networks to put together a good enough staff.
Gase will apparently be given more autonomy and will probably want someone that can implement his own ideas rather than bring their own.
Another offensive coach who worked under Gase in the past was Stan Drayton, who was the running backs coach while he was in Chicago and left a few years ago to take a collegiate job as the running game coordinator and assistant head coach at Texas. Drayton has been linked with some open head coaching roles at the college level, but would an NFL coordinator job tempt him more if Loggains is unavailable?
Beyond that, the Jets could perhaps look at some of their incumbent coaches. While last year's offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates is highly unlikely to retain his job, wide receivers coach Karl Dorrell has ambitions to be an NFL offensive coordinator one day, so a first-lieutenant role with Gase still running the show could be a good move for him. Running backs coach Stump Mitchell is reportedly also headed to Arizona, though.
As for filling out the rest of his staff, tight ends coach Shane Day and assistant offensive line coach Chris Kuper were two of the only coaches to retain their jobs for all three years of Gase's tenure in Miami. Also, if Gase needs a quarterbacks coach, Chad Pennington or Josh McCown would be popular choices.
Defense
Vance Joseph, Gregg Williams and Chuck Pagano were reportedly the three main candidates for the defensive coordinator role. However, the Arizona Cardinals are apparently planning to hire Joseph, who was Gase's defensive coordinator in Miami and, according to a report earlier today from Ian Rapoport, the Jets are close to an agreement with Williams who ended last season as the interim coach for the Browns.
Assuming Williams does indeed get hired, the Jets may opt to seek his input in filling out the defensive staff. His son, Blake Williams, was a linebackers coach with the Browns and ran the defense when his father became interim head coach last season, so he is an obvious choice. Williams would probably also like to bring Clyde Simmons over as his defensive line coach, but the Browns have retained him for the time being.
In the event Williams doesn't take the job after all, the Jets could revert to Pagano, who didn't have a job last year, other than some unofficial consulting work with the Texans.
Two alternative candidates that were surprisingly not considered are Jack Del Rio and Ed Donatell, each of whom coached with Gase in the past. Either one could be an option if something changes.
As to who could fill out the staff, Teryl Austin could be a candidate for the defensive backs role as the Jets' organization has shown interest in him in the past. He's coached under Pagano before but not Williams. (UPDATE: Austin reportedly joins Steelers as senior defensive assistant, per Adam Schefter).
However, a Williams hire might bode well for incumbent defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson, who was on Williams' staff with the Rams. Other than Wilson, most of the defensive staff will probably be replaced though.
Special teams
Finally, Jets fans will probably be hoping the team opts to retain Brant Boyer as special teams coordinator after last year's success. Darren Rizzi - who is also interviewing for the Dolphins' head coach role - had the job on Gase's staff last year.
