The Jets took Cal S Ashtyn Davis with their first pick in the third round of the NFL Draft.
Davis' story is an interesting one, as the track star walked on to the football team and worked his way up into a high-impact player that got scouts intrigued. He clearly caught the eye of GM Joe Douglas.
So here's Davis' grade...

The Jets had much bigger needs at other positions (see: edge rusher and cornerback), and they probably could have used this "Leonard Williams pick" on one of those. Instead, they added depth to a position that was already a strength, which is a bit of a curious move.
Not a bad move, though. Marcus Maye has always had trouble staying healthy (and he's entering the last year of his contract), and obviously Jamal Adams' long-term future is somewhat in doubt (even though the Jets say they want him to be a "Jet for life"). And in this era of pass-happy football, most teams go with three safeties much of the time anyway.
That's if the 6-1, 202-pound Davis is a safety. He was announced as a "defensive back" when he was selected, and some scouts believe his size and speed could make him a better cornerback than a safety. His versatility was probably attractive to Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, just like his high character and athletic ability probably appealed to Douglas.
So the player was a good one to take. The position may have been a little strange, but the value was certainly there.
