Brian Daboll high on Daniel Jones, but won't predict Josh Allen-like rise: 'I don't think that's fair'

'We're gonna find out what he does well. We're gonna try to implement a system that suits him'

Fresh off helping to turn a raw Josh Allen into one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, new Giants head coach Brian Daboll will attempt to mold Daniel Jones into a finished product who can be the long-term answer for Big Blue.

But speaking on Monday as he was officially introduced to the New York media, Daboll would not make any predictions about what he might be able to do with Jones. And he didn't want to compare Jones' untapped potential with what Allen's was a few seasons ago.

"We're gonna take it day by day," Daboll said. "We're not gonna make any predictions. I wouldn't do that to Daniel or really any other player. I don't think that's fair to compare him to another guy that I was working with. He's himself.

"We're gonna find out what he does well. We're gonna try to implement a system that suits him. And then it's our job to bring pieces in that help him to be the best version of himself and the best quarterback for us.

"He's got the right mindset. He's got good size. There's a lot of things to like about Daniel, and we'll just take it one day at a time. We'll work with him, we'll help him get better. We'll help him be a better leader, we'll help him be everything. That's our job as a coaching staff and as an organization. It takes everybody. It's not just me."

Added Daboll:

"It takes a lot to raise a quarterback, if you will. He's been around the block here these last few years with some different pieces. We're gonna try to give him some stability and just take it from there."

The words of praise Daboll directed toward Jones mirrored what new GM Joe Schoen said about him last week (though Schoen said he is not yet ready to make a decision on Jones' fifth-year option).

Giants co-owner John Mara said last week that the Giants -- going on the third head coach and third offensive system of Jones' young career -- had done everything possible to screw Jones up.

And on Monday, Mara said he would be very surprised if Jones was not the Giants' starter for Week 1 of the 2022 season.

Mara also noted that every GM and head coach candidate the Giants interviewed spoke positively about Jones.

"I think we did 10 general manager interviews and five head coach interviews, and every single interview was positive about Daniel," Mara said. "They're not willing to say he's gonna be the next Patrick Mahomes or anything like that, but they were excited about the potential he has and the possibility of working with him. And that to me was reassuring, because that's the way we feel as well."
