Free agent outfielder Kevin Pillar "could fit" with the Mets if they don't trade for Starling Marte, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, who also lists the Diamondbacks and Rangers as other potential fits.

The 31-year-old Pillar, who was DFA'd by the Giants in December, hit .264/.293/.442 with 21 homers and 37 doubles in 156 games for San Francisco in 2019.

Defensively in 2019, Pillar was worth -5 DRS in 129 games in center field. Digging deeper into Pillar's defense in 2019, he was in the 50th percentile when it came to jumps and still had above average sprint speed (in the 74th percentile).

Pillar was a solid offensive player last season (despite his ugly OBP) and can still play a decent outfield, but it's very hard to see where he fits with the Mets as they're currently constituted.

As things currently stand, the Mets are expected to enter the season with J.D. Davis in left field, Brandon Nimmo in center, and Michael Conforto in right.

There is also the presence of Yoenis Cespedes, who very well could be on the Opening Day roster, and elite defender Jake Marisnick, who was acquired via trade earlier this offseason and could be the short side of a platoon with Nimmo. Dominic Smith also remains on the roster.

In order for the Mets to shake the above up, it's fair to think they would have to be importing a player like Marte -- who is a true difference-maker on offense and whose defense before 2019 was above average.

The Mets could conceivably sign Pillar, shift Nimmo to left, and put Davis on the bench. But while Pillar was solid in 2019, he is arguably not a player worth shaking things up for.
