Mets star Francisco Lindor spoke to reporters on Wednesday during pregame warmups on the field at Fenway Park about the possibility of re-signing teammate Javier Báez in free agency.
Lindor was asked if he's spoken to Steve Cohen, Sandy Alderson, or any of the team's management about bringing Báez back next season, and gave his thoughts on what the former Cub has done in a Mets uniform.
"No, no, we haven't really talked," Lindor said. "I know Javy does fit in, in what we're trying to accomplish here. He's a winner, he's plays the game as hard as he can day in and day out. He gives it his best, and he's my boy too. That helps. At the end of the day, I know what he's capable of doing, we've all seen it. His approach has been outstanding, and he's definitely helped us win a couple more games in September for sure."
Báez has displayed his at talent at the plate, reaching base safely in 15 straight games to match his career-high. Since returning from the injured list on Aug. 22, Báez is batting .343 (34-for-99) with 23 runs, seven doubles, seven home runs, 15 RBI, nine walks, a .420 OBP, a .626 SLG and a 1.046 OPS.
Lindor was then asked if Cohen has enough money to pair the two infielders together for next handful of seasons.
"Yeah, yeah, of course, of course," Lindor said with a big smile on his face.
Báez could get a contract offer anywhere from $125 million over five or six years to upwards of $200 million over seven or eight years. He'll be one of the team's key free agents this offseason, and could remain amongst the likely roster shakeup.
In 38 games with the Mets, Báez has hit .304/.377/.556 with 28 runs, seven doubles, nine home runs, 19 RBI, 11 walks, and four steals.
Báez and Lindor's close relationship has shown success on the diamond, as the two helped lead Puerto Rico to a runner-up finish at the 2017 World Baseball Classic. Both were named to the All-World Baseball Classic team for their efforts during the tournament.
