It sounds as if Robinson Cano’s time as a San Diego Padre is all but over.

According to a report from Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Padres are expected to request that the former Mets second baseman be optioned to the minors. A vested veteran, Cano has the right and is expected to decline the option, making him a free agent.

Signed by the Padres on May 13, Cano has appeared in 11 games, but much like his time with the Mets, the results just simply weren’t there. Cano has slashed .094/.121/.094, recording just three singles in 33 plate appearances, striking out 10 times.

Prior to signing with the Padres, Cano played in 12 games with the Mets this season, slashing .195/.233/.268 while splitting time between second base and DH.

Acquired by the Mets in the 2019 trade that also brought Edwin Diaz to Queens in exchange for a package centered around Jarred Kelenic, Cano’s time as a Met was marred a performance-enhancing drug suspension and underwhelming play when available. The eight-time All-Star hit .269 with 24 home runs and 72 RBI in 168 games with the club.
