Former Giants WR Burress knows what must be done with Beckham Jr.'s contract

"I say just go pay the guy so they can put all that behind them..."

He is a top Giants wide receiver coming off an ankle injury with a contract situation looming over the team's head. Ring any bells?

Though the answer is certainly Odell Beckham Jr., former Giants WR Plaxico Burress is correct as well.

Back in 2008 when he was Eli Manning's top target, Burress was in the exact position Beckham is currently in this offseason. Burress had a longer contract with three years and $10 million still left on it, but he wanted a new, more lucrative deal before taking the field that season in case of another injury.

So, 10 years later, Burress has some advice for the Giants having gone through this scenario before: Pay Beckham sooner rather than later.

"Everybody in the world knows the guy needs to be rewarded," Burress told NJ.com's Ryan Dunleavy. "It's only a matter of time. Don't have him disgruntled going into the season, and then you lose him. Why even put yourself in that position?"

Beckham didn't follow in Burress' footsteps this offseason, though. Burress didn't participate in the team's minicamp, but did show up for training camp despite limiting himself heavily during practice.

Beckham, on the other hand, has been at the Giants' facility throughout the offseason including some of the team's workout program and all three days of mandatory minicamp. And though he has yet to be seen in team drills, Beckham has participated in individual drills showing his ankle is in good health.

It has been the right move by Beckham to show the Giants he is dedicated to the team. And Burress said his motivation to return despite not having a new contract yet was entirely due to his team.

"It became about the (other) guys," he said. "You try to handle your business as you should. I'm really close with a lot of the guys I played with. We were coming off a championship. Sitting down talking with those guys was like, 'It's not about them. It's about us.'

"We had a great team back then. Hopefully, those same thoughts go through (Odell's) mind and he's able to make the decision to show up and perform."

When Beckham is healthy, his performance on the field is something even Burress marvels at.

"I love watching him play," Burress said. "I think he is a generational talent. He has everything that a wide receiver possibly could have. He is a fierce competitor, and a lot of people misconstrue some of the things that go on. But the guy wants to win bad."

But, until it gets settled, Beckham's contract will always loom over Quest Diagnostic Training Facility when camp kicks off on July 25. Burress hopes the Giants don't let that become a problem that ultimately affects their brightest star next season.

"I hope that he doesn't let that affect him going into training camp," Burress said. "I say just go pay the guy so they can put all that behind them and everybody goes into a season with a tremendous focus of winning another championship."
