Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has agreed to become the Giants offensive coordinator, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano has confirmed.

The news was first reported by ESPN's Ed Werder, and later made official by the team. The Giants also offically announced Patrick Graham as assistant head coach/defensive coordinator and Thomas McGaughey as special teams coordinator.

Garrett was let go by the Cowboys on Jan. 5 after going 85-67 over 10 seasons as the team's head coach, and his contract officially expired on January 14.

Newly hired Giants head coach Joe Judge was given the freedom to pick his own coaching staff.

"I've known about Jason for a long time, not only through the general public as well-known as he is as head coach of the Cowboys," Judge said. "There were guys I worked with that I came across in my career at both Alabama and at the New England Patriots that worked with Jason through their time in Miami with him. They consistently all reflected on how smart he is, how great a teacher he is and how his perspective of the game was through a different lens than most coaches. And when he sees it, he's able to communicate it and paint that mental image to the players. And he does a fantastic job of making in-game adjustments.

"We had some great conversations when we were able to bring him in here. It was a great opportunity to get to know each other a little better than we had before. It was a great opportunity to sit there and talk ball and share philosophies and views on the game. It's a great system he brings with great teaching that will allow our players to go out there and play aggressively."

Vacchiano previously wrote that Garrett would be a smart pick by Judge and that he was a "very strong" contender for the job.

As a player, Garrett entered the NFL in 1989 with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Princeton. He served as a backup quarterback for the Cowboys from 1993-99 before joining the Giants in 2000.

After retiring from the NFL in 2005, he joined Nick Saban's Miami Dolphins staff as the quarterbacks coach. He then was hired by the Cowboys as their offensive coordinator in Jan. 2007.

On Nov. 8, 2010, Garrett was named interim head coach of the Cowboys after the team fired Wade Phillips. Garrett was officially named as the eighth head coach in Cowboys history on Jan. 6, 2010.

He led the Cowboys to three NFC East division titles over his tenure -- going 12-4 in 2014, 13-3 in 2016, and 10-6 in 2018 -- and was named NFL Coach of the Year in 2016.

Despite going 8-8 in 2019, the Cowboys averaged an NFL-best 431.5 yards per game, including 296.9 yards passing (No. 2 in the NFL) and 134.6 yards rushing (No. 5 in the NFL).
