The Devils and captain Nico Hischier have agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension, general manager Sunny Mehta announced Wednesday.

“When I took this job, I knew that Nico was one of the core pieces that I definitely wanted as part of our future,” Mehta said in a Devils release. “The way he plays the game, his leadership, and selflessness are qualities we value for this team.

“We all look forward to him leading this franchise, on and off the ice, for years to come.”

The deal, which will begin with the 2027-28 NHL season, will be worth $58.5 million and carry an $11.7 million average annual value.

Hischier, New Jersey’s captain since Feb. 2021, is coming off a season in which he recorded 66 points (28 goals, 38 assists) in 82 games.

“Since the day he was drafted,” Devils managing partner David Blitzer said, “Nico Hischier has represented the New Jersey Devils with class, commitment, and a dedication to the community. He puts the team before himself and wants nothing more than to win here in New Jersey.

“The entire organization is extremely proud that Nico wears the ‘C’ for us, and we couldn’t be happier that he’s signed this contract extension.”

Hischier, drafted by New Jersey with the No. 1 overall pick in 2017, has played 609 games for the club over nine seasons. He's tallied 199 goals and 289 assists (488 points) in the regular season and has 12 points (six goals, six assists) in 22 career games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
