The Jets need some cornerback help, and the Bucs may have just helped them out a bit with a transaction on Tuesday.
Tampa Bay released Vernon Hargreaves III, a former first-round pick back in 2016, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Hargreaves, who was arguably the top cornerback prospect coming out of Florida in that Draft, hasn't panned out with the Bucs. And during the team's loss to the Cardinals on Sunday, a certain non-hustle play that resulted in a large gain for Arizona prompted head coach Bruce Arians to bench him for the rest of the game.
Now, GM Jason Licht is letting him go. So could Jets GM Joe Douglas make the move to bring him aboard Gregg Williams' defense?
The Jets currently have a little less than $7.1 million in cap space, according to OverTheCap, so they could certainly sign him for the rest of the season. He's also owed $9.95 million next season after the Bucs picked up his fifth-year option.
Despite getting the win on Sunday over the Giants, the Jets were without their starting corners in Trumaine Johnson and Darryl Roberts. Johnson is out for the rest of the season after hitting IR, and Roberts injured his calf during last Wednesday's practice. It's being reported as a calf strain, and something that could linger for several weeks depending on its severity.
That left Nate Hairston and Arthur Maulet on the outside, and they had their struggles. Adding Hargreaves, if the Jets believe that his motor and hustle will improve, could be an upgrade to a position desperately in need of depth.
Through nine games this season, Hargreaves has 39 combined tackles, one interception, four passes defended and one fumble recovery.
