Sacred Heart scored four goals in the first period and went on to beat Yale 6-2 to advance to the Connecticut Ice final against Quinnipiac on Sunday.
Five things to know from Saturday's game
1) The first period belonged to the Pioneers, as Sacred Heart dominated the first 20 minutes. Sacred Heart put 13 shots on goal in the period, and four of them found the back of the net. Jason Cotton got things started with a power play tally, his 16th goal of the season. Two minutes later, Vito Bavaro scored his 15th of the year to double the lead. Later in the period, with Yale on the power play and looking to get back in the game, Matt Tugnutt scored a shorthanded goal, keeping all the momentum in the Pioneers' favor. Austin Magera then added another goal, making it a 4-0 lead at the first intermission.
2) To the Bulldogs' credit, they answered back right away in the beginning of the second period, as Dante Palecco scored on the power play to make it a 4-1 game. The score stayed that way for 14 minutes, before Sacred Heart struck again on the power play, with Jordan Kaplan beating Nicholas MacNab to make it a 5-1 game after two periods.
3) It was a rough game for Yale's starting goalie Corbin Kaczperski. as he allowed four goals on nine shots in the game's first 15 minutes before being pulled for MacNab.
4) In the third period, Evan Wisocky scored on a beautiful odd-man rush to put the Pioneers up by a commanding 6-1 score. Late in the game, Yale's Brett Jewell scored a power play goal with a minute left, but it was far too late for any type of a comeback.
5) Sacred Heart's Jordan Kaplan was named the game's first star, as he totaled one goal and one assist, while getting three shots on net.
