On Saturday morning, the Yankees held their first informal workout in Tampa since the spread of coronavirus shut down spring training.

According to Kristie Ackert of the Daily News, position players such as DJ LeMahieu, Gio Urshela, Tyler Wade, Brett Gardner, and Clint Frazier were in attendance, as were pitchers Luis Cessa, Chad Green, and Jonathan Holder.

There was no media allowed at the workout, but players could be seen through a chain link fence from a distance.

As he left the workout, Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza offered a bit of an update.

"It went well. Large group of players showed up today and we were able to do defensive work, infield work, guys hit indoors, pitchers played catch," Mendoza told Ackert as he drove away from the facility. "We'll continue to do that."

"It's pretty strange," he added. "Obviously a difficult situation but we're trying our best to do what we can."

Plans can always change, given the unknown next steps that medical, state, and local officials will take to keep people safe amid the coronavirus outbreak, but for now, the Yankees have unanimously voted to stay in Tampa and continue their work.

"We want to support and obviously that's our job. We'll see where this situation will take us because every day it looks like it changes, so who knows what's going to happen," Mendoza said. "But as of right now we're here for them.

"Guys will be able to keep their arms sharp, be able to work out. And, you know, like [Brian Cashman] said, this is going to be something that changes on a daily basis and hopefully becomes more and more clear as we move along," Aaron Boone said. "As to when the season is going to begin, it's going to have to evolve each and every day. But for right now, you know, they'll be able to get in whether they want to work in the cage, whether it's in the weight room, whether it's the training staff providing service they need, whether it's pitchers keeping their arms going and having the ability to throw bullpens."

As of now, all of spring training has been suspended, and the start of the regular season has been pushed back by at least two weeks.
