Noah Syndergaard was previously scheduled to face the Mets on Sunday, but it was announced on Thursday that the Los Angeles Angels’ righty will not pitch against his former team.
Angels interim manager Phil Nevin shook up the Angels’ pitching plans on Thursday, explaining that he wanted to give Syndergaard extra rest, moving the right-hander’s spot in the rotation back a couple of days from Sunday to Tuesday.
Nevin did not yet name a starter for Friday night’s first game of the series, but Michael Lorenzen and Patrick Sandoval have been pushed back to Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Syndergaard, 29, signed a one-year, $21 million contract with the Angels this offseason. In nine starts, he’s pitched to a 3.69 ERA and 1.187 WHIP, striking out 30 hitters in 46.1 innings.
His most recent start was on Monday night, when he threw 99 pitches over 6.0 innings of one-run work against the Boston Red Sox.
Acquired by the Mets in December 2012 in the deal that sent R.A. Dickey to the Toronto Blue Jays, Syndergaard pitched six seasons with the Mets, posting a 3.32 ERA while earning an All-Star nod in 2016. He also appeared in five postseason games as a Met, posting a 2.42 ERA.
