On Thursday night, Alex Rodriguez will be on the call with the ESPN broadcast crew for the Mets’ Opening Day matchup with the Nationals in Washington.

Of course, it wasn’t all that long ago that Rodriguez attempted to buy the Mets, as his group was among the final bidders before the team was ultimate sold to Steve Cohen in a deal that was approved by MLB owners on October 30, 2020.

But as Rodriguez begins his fourth season as part of the Sunday Night Baseball crew, he told reporters via a Zoom call that he doesn’t feel strange about calling the Mets’ Opening Day game.

“It’s not strange at all,” Rodriguez said. “We gave it a great run and the Mets are a fantastic franchise with a great fan base. I think their ownership is going to do a fantastic job."

In fact, he even praised the Mets’ current “competitive advantage” of having an aggressive owner like Cohen.

“I also think the Mets very much have a competitive advantage," Rodriguez explained. "When you have 29 teams that have been bleeding (from a pandemic) and you have one owner that’s coming in hot and ready to win a World Championship, there’s an immense competitive advantage for the Mets.

“I know certainly that’s how we were looking at it coming in with dry powder and being able to make an impact. I think in today’s environment $100 million will play like $200 (million) or $300 (million), so for the first year or two the Mets have an advantage to take some market share of what’s out there.”
