Speaking Wednesday night after the Mets were officially eliminated from playoff contention after the Brewers beat the Reds, Mets manager Mickey Callaway addressed his job status for the 2020 season.

"Obviously, I have the utmost confidence in myself. I'm never gonna give up, never gonna quit, and I think that I'm the right guy to lead that team in there," Callaway said. "And I will do that to the best of my ability as long as I can."

Callaway, 44, also spoke on Wednesday night about how proud he was of his players.

"I had a meeting with the guys just now. I felt like we still had a chance until I saw that 'F' up on the board for final. I really did. That's how I felt all year, and I thanked them for making that so. Because that's what you want. You want everybody in the room pulling in the same direction, and that's what we had all year. Did we get to our ultimate goal and get in the playoffs? No, and that stinks. We fought hard as any team I've ever seen. So I'm proud of those guys for that.

While Callaway's second season at the helm won't end with a playoff appearance for the Mets and while his in-game tactical decisions still left a lot to be desired, GM Brodie Van Wagenen gave Callaway credit in late-August for helping to keep the clubhouse together and motivated -- something that was instrumental in the team digging itself out of a huge hole and putting themselves firmly in playoff contention.

"One of the characteristics that I think Mickey has done really well -- at least on the 2019 season where I've been able to see a first-hand view of it -- is he's maintained the clubhouse," Van Wagenen said on Aug. 27. "I think that even through the adversity that we experienced the first four months of the year, that clubhouse has remained united."

Adding that everyone in the clubhouse gets along and citing their chemistry, Van Wagenen said it had been a true unit all season under Callaway.

"From veterans to the young kids to the American born players to the international players, there's been a unit that was created in spring training and was able to be sustained over the course of the season," Van Wagenen said. "It's been fun to watch these guys get along, and I credit Mickey for being able to hold this group together and put us in the position where we are now."

Various players have also come out in support of Callaway, including Jeff McNeil, who weighed in on the subject in late-August.

"(Callaway) deserves a lot of credit," McNeil told WFAN. "We love playing for him. He's a lot of fun. He keeps the clubhouse loose, keeps it fun, has meetings when you have to have meetings. I credit a lot to him. He's done a great job."
