Jets QB Sam Darnold will remain inactive for Week 3 against the Patriots, but he is making progress in his return from mono.

Darnold, who had been quarantined since his illness was diagnosed, was at the Jets' facility on Tuesday, head coach Adam Gase said, adding that Darnold is "feeling better."

"We will really have a better idea (of when Darnold can return) when the doctors give us the green light that he can progress," Gase said. "The doctors are letting us know when to proceed with him."

While Darnold is feeling better, two doctors recently told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano that Darnold returning by Week 5 would be a stretch considering the recovery Darnold has to go through. Instead, those doctors believe a Week 7 return against the Patriots is a more likely outcome.

As Darnold recovers, one potential complication that could delay his return is an enlarged spleen, Dr. Aaron E. Glatt -- chair of medicine at South Nassau Communities Hospital -- told SNY last week.

"The one major concern for a professional football player would be an enlarged spleen," Glatt said. "Unfortunately, a professional football player is exposed to tremendous contact and can be potentially hit very severely on their spleen. If the spleen is enlarged, as it often is in patients with mono, it is potentially at greater risk for rupture than a normal, healthy person who doesn't have an enlarged spleen. Therefore, we normally recommend patients who have mono abstain from contact sports."

Gase also provided the following injury updates on Tuesday...

  • Jordan Jenkins is week-to-week with calf injury
  • Demaryius Thomas is week-to-week with a knee injury
  • Trevor Siemian is out for the year
  • C.J. Mosley and Quinnen Williams remain day-to-day
