When Mets starter Nolan McLean struck out the side in the first inning, manager Carlos Mendoza thought he was "on." It went downhill from there however as McLean served up seven runs and five hits, failing to get out of the fourth inning in a 7-2 loss. Both McLean and Mendoza pointed to lack of command on his secondary pitches, made even less effective by falling behind in counts.

Mets starter Nolan McLean simply didn't have it. He was roughed up by the Reds for seven runs and five hits in 3.1 innings of a 7-2 loss. The Mets offense didn't fare much better with the lone bright spot coming on a solo home run from Marcus Semien. The Mets have now scored two runs or less in 24 of their first 54 games this season.

Mets starting pitcher Christian Scott had his longest outing of the 2026 season, throwing 5.2 scoreless innings against the Marlins on Sunday, but the Mets' bats were unable to generate any offense, as they took a 4-0 loss and a sweep in Miami.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza and 1B Mark Vientos credited Miami's Max Meyer with being "nasty" as he shut down the Mets, allowing just one hit over seven innings. New York starter Freddy Peralta went seven innings for the first time this season and while he was glad to give the bullpen a much needed break, he was not happy with serving up a pair of homers to the Marlins' Liam Hicks.

For the second straight game the Mets managed just three hits in a 4-1 loss to the Marlins. Mark Vientos was the only Met with two hits and an RBI. Starter Freddy Peralta went seven innings, striking out nine but surrendered a pair of home runs to Liam Hicks and New York has now lost four of their last five games.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza acknowledged that the Mets offense had a tough time against Marlins starter Eury Perez save for Juan Soto's solo home run in the their 2-1 loss. Mendoza was encouraged by Jonah Tong's relief appearance in his 2026 MLB debut, pitching three scoreless innings. Tong said it was "awesome" to be with the big club again and continues to trust the organization's process in his development.

Kodai Senga's road back to Citi Field began on Friday night, where he threw 3.1 innings for Single-A St. Lucie in his first rehab start. He allowed four hits, two runs and struck out two on 61 pitches.

Yankees

For Gerrit Cole, the arduous journey to getting back on the mound at Yankee Stadium culminated in the best way possible: six innings of shutout ball in a 4-2 loss to the Tampa Rays. Cole compared it to making a second MLB debut. He termed his performance "efficient" and is already looking ahead to his next start against Kansas City. Cole did take time out to compliment catcher Austin Wells on his preparation who in turn said it was good to have him back. Manager Aaron Boone expects Cole to get even better and expects to see more of his "swing and miss stuff" as he progresses.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone, 2B Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Cody Bellinger all expressed their admiration at closer David Bednar's toughness in closing out the Blue Jays just one day after a blown save against the Mets. The teams combined to hit five home runs between them but Bednar retiring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to close out a 7-6 Yankees win proved to be the play of the game.

With the Mets down to their final out in the ninth inning, Tyrone Taylor blasted a game-tying three-run homer off Yankees' closer David Bednar, setting the stage for Carson Benge to complete the heroic comeback in the 10th inning with a walk-off fielder's choice. With the 7-6 win over the Yankees, the Mets take the first edition of the Subway Series in 2026.

Yankees starter Carlos Rodon failed to get out of the third inning in Saturday's loss to the Mets and blamed it on a lack of consistency in his pitches. Manager Aaron Boone saw some encouraging signs but agreed the lefty's command is still a work in progress.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone wasn't surprised by Cam Schlittler's dominating performance in the Yankees 5-2 win over the Mets in the Subway Series opener. Schlittler and teammate Jazz Chisholm Jr. both enjoyed the atmosphere of the rivalry and were happy to come away with the win. Rookie OF Spencer Jones' reaction to the Subway Series was tempered somewhat by the news that his ground ball in the fourth inning struck Mets starter Clay Holmes in the right leg, resulting in a fractured fibula. Jones who works out with Holmes in the off-season, had no idea the injury had occurred till reporters filled him in.
