Mets

Mets lefty David Peterson hasn't been able to put together consistent outings all year long and he took a big step backward in a 7-2 loss to the Reds. Peterson was hit hard, surrendering 11 hits and six earned runs. Manager Carlos Mendoza and catcher Luis Torrens also offered their takes on Peterson's ineffectiveness. One pitcher who's happy to be back on a big league mound at all is reliever A.J. Minter, who saw his first action in 13 months, after a serious lat injury.

Other than Juan Soto's two-run HR, the Mets didn't have much to cheer about as they lost to the Reds 7-2 for the second straight game. David Peterson allowed 11 hits and six earned runs as New York lost its fifth game in a row.

When Mets starter Nolan McLean struck out the side in the first inning, manager Carlos Mendoza thought he was "on." It went downhill from there however as McLean served up seven runs and five hits, failing to get out of the fourth inning in a 7-2 loss. Both McLean and Mendoza pointed to lack of command on his secondary pitches, made even less effective by falling behind in counts.

Mets starter Nolan McLean simply didn't have it. He was roughed up by the Reds for seven runs and five hits in 3.1 innings of a 7-2 loss. The Mets offense didn't fare much better with the lone bright spot coming on a solo home run from Marcus Semien. The Mets have now scored two runs or less in 24 of their first 54 games this season.

The Mets' number three prospect Ryan Clifford had himself a day at the plate in Syracuse's doubleheader on Sunday, with two homers and a double in the affairs. On the other side of the ball, the Mets'; fifth ranked prospect Jack Wenninger struck out five hitters over five innings in his start against Buffalo.

Yankees

For Gerrit Cole, the arduous journey to getting back on the mound at Yankee Stadium culminated in the best way possible: six innings of shutout ball in a 4-2 loss to the Tampa Rays. Cole compared it to making a second MLB debut. He termed his performance "efficient" and is already looking ahead to his next start against Kansas City. Cole did take time out to compliment catcher Austin Wells on his preparation who in turn said it was good to have him back. Manager Aaron Boone expects Cole to get even better and expects to see more of his "swing and miss stuff" as he progresses.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone, 2B Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Cody Bellinger all expressed their admiration at closer David Bednar's toughness in closing out the Blue Jays just one day after a blown save against the Mets. The teams combined to hit five home runs between them but Bednar retiring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to close out a 7-6 Yankees win proved to be the play of the game.

With the 7-6 win over the Yankees, the Mets take the first edition of the Subway Series in 2026.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone wasn't surprised by Cam Schlittler's dominating performance in the Yankees 5-2 win over the Mets in the Subway Series opener. Schlittler and teammate Jazz Chisholm Jr. both enjoyed the atmosphere of the rivalry and were happy to come away with the win. Rookie OF Spencer Jones' reaction to the Subway Series was tempered somewhat by the news that his ground ball in the fourth inning struck Mets starter Clay Holmes in the right leg, resulting in a fractured fibula. Jones who works out with Holmes in the off-season, had no idea the injury had occurred till reporters filled him in.
