For Gerrit Cole, the arduous journey to getting back on the mound at Yankee Stadium culminated in the best way possible: six innings of shutout ball in a 4-2 loss to the Tampa Rays. Cole compared it to making a second MLB debut. He termed his performance "efficient" and is already looking ahead to his next start against Kansas City. Cole did take time out to compliment catcher Austin Wells on his preparation who in turn said it was good to have him back. Yankees manager Aaron Boone, 2B Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Cody Bellinger all expressed their admiration at closer David Bednar's toughness in closing out the Blue Jays just one day after a blown save against the Mets. The teams combined to hit five home runs between them but Bednar retiring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to close out a 7-6 Yankees win proved to be the play of the game.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone wasn't surprised by Cam Schlittler's dominating performance in the Yankees 5-2 win over the Mets in the Subway Series opener. Rookie OF Spencer Jones' reaction to the Subway Series was tempered somewhat by the news that his ground ball in the fourth inning struck Mets starter Clay Holmes in the right leg, resulting in a fractured fibula. Jones who works out with Holmes in the off-season, had no idea the injury had occurred till reporters filled him in.
