Other than Juan Soto's two-run HR, the Mets didn't have much to cheer about as they lost to the Reds 7-2 for the second straight game. David Peterson allowed 11 hits and six earned runs as New York lost its fifth game in a row.

Mets starter Nolan McLean simply didn't have it. He was roughed up by the Reds for seven runs and five hits in 3.1 innings of a 7-2 loss. The Mets offense didn't fare much better with the lone bright spot coming on a solo home run from Marcus Semien. The Mets have now scored two runs or less in 24 of their first 54 games this season.

For Gerrit Cole, the arduous journey to getting back on the mound at Yankee Stadium culminated in the best way possible: six innings of shutout ball in a 4-2 loss to the Tampa Rays. Cole compared it to making a second MLB debut. He termed his performance "efficient" and is already looking ahead to his next start against Kansas City. Cole did take time out to compliment catcher Austin Wells on his preparation who in turn said it was good to have him back. Manager Aaron Boone expects Cole to get even better and expects to see more of his "swing and miss stuff" as he progresses.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone, 2B Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Cody Bellinger all expressed their admiration at closer David Bednar's toughness in closing out the Blue Jays just one day after a blown save against the Mets. The teams combined to hit five home runs between them but Bednar retiring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to close out a 7-6 Yankees win proved to be the play of the game.
