Mets starter Clay Holmes pitched three perfect innings in the spring training opener as he prepares to move to the starting rotation this season. He has expanded his repertoire, including a changeup and credited catcher Francisco Alvarez with calling all his new pitches despite facing just nine batters.

At sold-out Clover Park, Juan Soto gave the crowd what they came to see, a solo HR in the bottom of the first inning as the Mets went on to defeat the Astros 6-2. Clay Holmes, making the transition from reliever to starter, breezed through three scoreless innings while striking out three batters.

Mets right fielder Juan Soto couldn't have scripted it any better, hitting a solo HR in his first at-bat against the Houston Astros. Soto attributed his successful start to the hard work he's put in both during the offseason and the first week of spring training. As for the home run, he felt Astros pitcher Colton Gordon would come right back with a fastball after getting a swinging strike on the previous pitch and Soto thought, "Don't miss it."

Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman met the media on Friday to announce a modification of the team's facial hair policy. Steinbrenner says he spoke with several people in and out of the industry and felt the time was right to make the change.  UConn head coach Geno Auriemma and Paige Bueckers both talked about the Huskies' aggressive defensive approach and quick ball movement in their 86-47 win over Butler. The only blemish was a poor third quarter, allowing Butler to score 25 points in 10 minutes. The feel-good moment for Auriemma and Bueckers was the return of teammate Caroline Ducharme after several head injuries that sidelined her for almost two years.
