Every Monday, we'll be taking a look at how the Yankees' top prospects (their MLB.com Yankees Top 10 rankings are in parenthesis) are faring.

Jonathan Loaisiga, SP, Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (No. 2) - 2019

After spending the beginning of the season with the Yankees, Loaisiga (ranked No. 62 among all pro-spects according to MLB Pipeline) made his first start for the RailRiders on Wednesday. Loaisiga worked five innings, allowing two runs on two hits (including a home run). He walked three batters and struck out seven in taking the loss. In the Yankees' "next man up" season, Loaisiga will surely see some more time in the Bronx and be asked to make an impact.

Albert Abreu, RHP, Double-A Trenton (No. 3) -- ETA 2020

Abreu tossed four innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits and walking four batters, while allowing just one run. Abreu only struck out two batters and continues to throw a multitude of pitches, which has limited his ability to throw deep into games. Batters are hitting .340 off of Abreu and his 10:8 walk to strikeout ratio is less than ideal.

Deivi Garcia, RHP, High-A Tampa (No. 4) -- ETA 2020

In Garcia's third start of the season, the 19-year-old threw 90 pitches allowing one run on one hit, walked three and struck out eight batters in 4 2/3 innings. Garcia now has 23 strikeouts in just 12 innings of work and he's limited batters to a .205 batting average on the season. Garcia is turning heads and his path to a promotion could be fast-tracked if he continues to dominate hitters.

Clarke Schmidt, RHP, High-A Tampa (No. 5) -- ETA 2020

Schmidt, the Yankees first round draft pick (No. 16 overall) in the 2017 MLB First Year Player Draft, boosted his pitch count to a season-high 85 tosses and did a better job of limiting walks (one) while striking out six hitters. However, Schmidt was tagged for three runs on six hits en route to a no decision.

Trevor Stephan, RHP, Double-A Trenton (No. 8) -- ETA 2019

Stephan's ETA to reach the big leagues per MLB Pipeline seems a bit aggressive for a pitcher and his performance thus far for the Thunder demonstrates the notion. Stephan allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk in just three innings of work. Stephan has made three starts this season in which he's being hit to the tune of a .318 batting average with seven walks and 16 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings.

Roansy Contreras, RHP, Low-A Charleston (No. 10) -- ETA 2022

Contreras, 19, like the other pitchers covered, built up his pitch count (89) in his most recent outing. Contreras was unable to use those extra pitches to extend his time in the game, in fact, he worked just 4 1/3 innings. An efficiency of pitches is something that Contreras will be able to grow through as he matures and if he continues to limit walks (four in 14 innings this season).

Nick Nelson, RHP, Double-A Trenton (No. 11) -- ETA 2020

Nelson hit the injured list (shoulder) after an inconsistent, yet somehow effective start (six walks and seven strikeouts) in which he allowed zero runs in five innings. Nelson threw 106 pitches in the contest, begging the question of whether he might have been pushed to his limit this early in the season.

Luis Gil, RHP, Low-A Charleston (No. 13) -- ETA 2022

Gil, 20, dazzled in his start Friday, striking out nine batters and allowing just three base runners in five innings of work. In 12 1/3 innings, Gil has 18 strikeouts and is holding batters to a measly .167 batting average. Gil tossed 46 innings in 2018, generating a 1.96 ERA, so his successful start to this season (1.46 ERA) appears to be a welcome carryover.

Luis Medina, RHP, Low-A Charleston (No. 14) -- ETA 2022

Medina, 19, scattered eight hits and walked two batters, but was successful in stranding base runners as he allowed just one run on Saturday. Medina is allowing a ton of contact this season (hitters are batting .438 against him), but the walks being limited in comparison to his first two starts was a positive occurrence.

Garrett Whitlock, RHP, Double-A Tampa (No. 16) -- ETA 2020

Whitlock, 22, is one Yankees prospect that seems primed to make quick strides up the rankings this season. Whitlock's third start of the season on Friday resulted in his second win as he's showing that his 2018 season (1.86 ERA in 120 2/3 innings across three levels) was not a fluke. Whitlock's 1.50 ERA and 16:3 strikeout to walk ratio is something that differentiates him from pitchers currently ranked ahead of him, but as suggested that could change over the course of the season if these fine performances continue.
