After a sluggish performance the last few days in Tampa Bay, the Yankees offense came alive back home in the Bronx with a 9-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Here are the takeaways...

- Noah Syndergaard made his return to the Big Apple (he’ll be against his old Mets this weekend), and it wasn’t great. After Aaron Judge walked, he scored from first on an Anthony Rizzo double (that was almost robbed on a dive by Mike Trout). The next batter, Gleyber Torres, drove him in with a double (he overslid third base on a triple attempt), but it was an early 2-0 lead for the Yankees. Matt Carpenter took advantage of the short porch, drilling a two-run home run to make it 4-0 Bombers. The offense didn’t stop there – after Joey Gallo hit an opposite field single, he scored from first on a DJ LeMahieu double. Syndergaard lasted just 2.1 innings, allowing those five runs on seven hits, inducing just one swing-and-miss.

- In the sixth inning, Jose Trevino avoided a tag at home plate and scored the Yanks’ sixth run of the night. Judge added a sac fly to make it 7-0, and Trevino belted a two-run homer in the eighth to make it 9-1.

- In the first inning, Judge robbed a home run from Shohei Ohtani in center field, and Jordan Montgomery held his own with the lead (finally some run support). He didn’t overpower the Los Angeles lineup, but he limited the damage as the Angels couldn’t make much hard contact, and the Yanks played great defense behind him, including a diving stop by Isiah Kiner-Falefa to rob Trout of an RBI single. He shut the Angels out through six innings, but Luis Rengifo hit a solo homer in the seventh to get the Angels on the board. In all, the lefty allowed just that one run on four hits, walking one and striking out four. His ERA is down to 3.04. Montgomery has allowed no more than three runs in all 10 of his starts this year.

- Miguel Castro pitched for the first time in almost a week, and he promptly put runners on the corners (former Yankee Andrew Velazquez then stole second). But he pulled quite the act, retiring the top of the Angels lineup in order. Taylor Ward struck out, Ohtani's fly ball to center wasn't deep enough (combined with Judge's arm), and Trout flied out to center to end the threat.

- Gallo reached base in his first three plate appearances as he singled, walked, and doubled. In his previous 33 plate appearances, he reached base just four times.

- In his last 35 games, Torres is hitting .281 with a .529 slugging percentage. In his first two big league seasons, he was a .275 hitter and slugged .511.

- With his two singles and homer on Tuesday, Trevino is slashing .333/.375/.463/.556 in his last 17 games.

- As of the time of this story being published, the Yankees again hold sole possession of the best record in baseball. They also are 13-8 against teams over .500, the best record in MLB (min. 15 games).
