The Yankees played their final tune-up game before Thursday’s opener, falling to the Washington Nationals 3-0 at Nationals Park.

- Nestor Cortes started this one on the mound. He allowed a solo home run to Alex Call in the second, but he was solid overall. The lefty pitched 4.0 innings (though the Yankees got him an extra up-down by pulling him in the fourth and sending him back out for an out in the fifth), allowing one earned run on three hits. He walked one and didn’t strike out a batter.

- Aaron Boone’s starting lineup on Tuesday might end up being very close to what the team rolls out on Thursday. Giancarlo Stanton wasn’t in the lineup (instead DJ LeMahieu served as DH and hit leadoff), and the Yankees went with an outfield align of Aaron Hicks, Aaron Judge, and Oswaldo Cabrera from left to right. Anthony Volpe started at short, hitting ninth.

- If there were any questions about Volpe’s glove being big league ready, he answered them on Tuesday. First, the 21-year-old made a fantastic dive behind second base to get to a ball, making a strong throw to first for the out. Later, he snagged a bullet of a line drive that looked like it was heading to left for a single, but he made the play to end the inning.

Volpe went 1-for-2 with a single before being pulled from the game with the other starters.

- It was a pretty quiet afternoon for the Yankees offense. The Bombers had just three hits on the day, all of which were singles.

- The Yankees didn't use any of their high-leverage relievers in this game, so Clay Holmes, Jonathan Loaisiga, Wandy Peralta, Ron Marinaccio and Michael King should all be completely fresh for Opening Day.
