Six takeaways from Sunday's game...

1) The Yankees opened with Chad Green and the struggling right-hander struck out all three batters he faced. If Green can get back to his 2017 production the Yankees can use him in multiple areas in the bullpen, which would make him a weapon as the season progresses.

2) Despite a rocky first inning of work (two runs allowed), David Hale got the Yanks through the fifth inning after Green's departure. Hale's final line - 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB and 4 K - was exactly what the Yankees hoped he'd provide.

3) Brett Gardner is in the midst of a patented hot streak. With today's two-run home run, he's hitting .467 (14-for-30) with four doubles, two home runs, a triple and five RBIs in his last nine games. The burst has increased his batting average from .193 to .240 on the season.

4) Clint Frazier doubled and launched his 10th home run of the season, and his fourth in his last seven games. Frazier's glove work can be a sore spot, but he's done quite well at the plate this season and he'll continue to see plenty of playing time until both Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge return from the injured list.

5) Gary Sanchez struck out in his first three at-bats and then struck his 16th home run of the season in the eighth inning, which provided the Yanks an insurance run. Sanchez hit 18 home runs in 323 at-bats last season. He's reached his current mark in 136 at-bats.

6) The final four Yankee relievers combined for four scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, no walks and struck out four batters.

The Yankees and Padres square off again on Tuesday. RHP Masahiro Tanaka will be on the hill for New York while San Diego will send LHP Eric Lauer. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
