A night after beating the Minnesota Twins in a 10-7 slugfest, the Yankees needed 13 innings to score two runs, but they made them count, beating the Chicago Cubs, 2-1.

Here are the takeaways...

- Luis Severino took the ball for the Yanks and got off to a blistering start, striking out three batters in the first inning. He whiffed two more in the second and struck out five of the first seven hitters to face him.

- He did, however, find some trouble in the third inning when Jason Heyward led off the inning with a double. After tagging to third base on a Nick Madrigal lineout that Aaron Judge made a diving catch on, Christopher Morel hit a ground ball to Gleyber Torres with the infield drawn in. Heyward broke on contact but Torres fired a strike to Kyle Higashioka at home plate who slapped the tag on Heyward who was out by a mile.

- After the fine play in the field, Torres broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a leadoff home run to center field off Daniel Norris who replaced Cubs starter Wade Miley, who left after an apparent shoulder injury.

- The lead didn’t last long as Heyward made up for his baserunning blunder earlier in the game with a solo blast to left field in the fifth inning off Severino. It was Severino’s only mistake of the night as he finished his outing by going six innings, giving up just the one run on seven hits, one walk and striking out 10.

But after Heyward’s home run, the offense completely dried up for both sides.

- Miguel Castro, Michael King and Clay Holmes each pitched an inning of relief for New York without giving up a run as Holmes continued to lower his ERA. He’s now at 0.31 on the season and hasn’t given up a run since his first appearance of the year against the Boston Red Sox on April 8. He’s gone scoreless in his last 28 innings pitched.

- The Yankees had a chance in the eighth inning after a Giancarlo Stanton walk was followed by a Josh Donaldson single to put runners on first and second. But strikeouts by Torres and Aaron Hicks neutralized the threat and after a clean ninth inning by both squads, the game headed to extra innings.

- Even with the free runner at second base to start the inning in extras, neither team could get the big hit.

- In the 11th, with Clarke Schmidt pitching, Rafael Ortega lined one right back to Schmidt who caught it and doubled off the runner at second base to end the inning.

In the 13th, Ron Marinaccio had runners on second and third but struck out P.J. Higgins to get himself out of trouble.

- Meanwhile, the Yankees couldn’t find a single hit since Donaldson’s single in the eighth inning until pinch-hitter Jose Trevino came to bat in the 13th inning. With runners on second and third and two outs, Trevino laced a single to left field that scored Joey Gallo and ended the marathon.

- In total, the Cubs used eight relievers while the Yankees used six. Alec Mills suffered the loss and Marinaccio, the Toms River, NJ-native, got his first career win.
