The Yankees are signing right-hander Marcus Stroman to a two-year, $37 million deal, according to SNY's Andy Martino, addressing their most glaring area of need.

The deal, which was first reported by Jon Heyman of the NY Post, includes a third-year vesting option which kicks in if Stroman pitches 140 innings in year two, per Martino.

Stroman will join a rotation that is led by Gerrit Cole, and provide the Yanks with a jolt following their failed pursuit of Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

The fit with Stroman is an interesting one, when you consider that GM Brian Cashman took a shot at him back in 2019 after weighing whether to trade for him, saying he didn't think Stroman would be "a difference-maker," and that the team "felt he would be in our bullpen" in the playoffs.

Stroman didn't take kindly to that, saying he would "never" forget it.

Despite the past frostiness between Stroman and the Yanks, he should be a nice fit near the top of New York's rotation.

Stroman, 32, is coming of an All-Star season with the Chicago Cubs where he posted a 3.95 ERA (3.58 FIP) and 1.259 WHIP while striking out 119 batters in 136.2 innings over 27 games (25 starts).

He has a 3.65 career ERA in nine big league seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, Mets, and Cubs.

A ground ball specialist, Stroman's stuff could work well in the small confines of Yankee Stadium.

Stroman had a ground ball rate of 57.4 percent last season (in the 94th percentile, via Baseball Savant) and allowed only nine home runs.

He was also elite when it came to preventing hitters from barreling him up -- in the 88th percentile.
