The New York Yankees fell 3-1 to the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night. The bats went silent again and the Yanks have now lost their fifth straight series.
Here are the takeaways...
- The Yankees wasted another good performance from one of their starting pitchers. After allowing a three-run first inning homer to Randy Arozarena, Nestor Cortes Jr. was dominant the rest of the way. The southpaw went seven innings allowing just those three runs while striking out three. The starting pitchers have mustered together a very strong string of starts. The bats have given absolutely no help
- The Bombers lone run came after Andrew Benintendi hit a one-out triple off the right center field wall. Miguel Andujar reached on an error by third basemen Yandy Diaz which allowed Benintendi to score in the bottom of the fifth inning. That would be the first run the Bombers scored since Saturday night against the Red Sox.
- The Yanks had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. Gleyber Torres grounded a two-out single up the middle to set up Aaron Judge as the tying run. Judge grounded out to shortstop to end the threat and keep it at 3-1.
- Albert Abreu added two strong frames after Cortes left. The right-hander kept the deficit to just two runs. However, the Yanks couldn't answer in the bottom of the ninth and would lose the game 3-1.
