The Yankees offense was quiet again as they were defeated by the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 in the opener of a three-game set on Monday night in the Bronx.

Here are some takeaways...

- Jhony Brito was recalled from Triple-A to start in place of Domingo German and the Rays jumped on the young right-hander early and often. Yandy Diaz led off the game with a single and two batters later, Brandon Lowe cracked a two-run homer to make it 2-0 Tampa.

Brito was helped out by his defense and worked around a leadoff double in a scoreless second. His offense rewarded him in the bottom half of the inning, as Jake Bauers cracked a solo shot into the bullpen to make it 2-1 Rays.

The right-hander's struggles returned in the third, however, as Wander Franco cracked a two-out solo home run to deep right to make it a 3-1 ballgame. An inning later, Brito allowed two more homers, as Issac Paredes and Josh Lowe went back-to-back giving Tampa Bay a 5-1 lead.

Brito was able to strikeout the next batter bringing the inning, and his night, to an end. In his return to the big leagues for the spot start, he allowed five runs on four homers and struck out four over just four innings.

- German, who was originally scratched due to armpit discomfort, surprisingly came on in his place out of the bullpen. The right-hander must've been feeling better because he was able to put together four relatively effortless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

He came back out for a fifth inning of work, and allowed a one out double to Luke Raley, for just his second hit allowed. After a walk put two on and one out, German was able to get a ground out and a strike out to work his way out of the inning unharmed. After feeling some soreness pregame, he tossed five stellar innings and allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out four.

- After being shutdown by Tyler Glasnow for most of the game after the Bauers homer, the Yankees offense was finally able to get something going in the sixth. Aaron Judge drew his second walk of the night, followed by an Anthony Rizzo single, setting up runners on the corners with one out.

However, Giancarlo Stanton swung at the first pitch he saw and grounded into an inning-ending double play. Stanton finished the night 0-for-4 with a strikeout, he's now hitting below the Mendoza line (.198) and has a .709 OPS on the year.

- Glasnow held the Yankees offense to just the one run on three hits while walking two and striking out eight over seven innings. The Bombers weren't able to get much else going against the Rays bullpen in the eighth and ninth, as they went down quietly in the series opening loss.

- In his first game back at Yankee Stadium since returning from the injured list, Judge finished 0-for-1 but drew three walks out of the DH spot.

- New York managed just six base runners on the night (three hits, three walks) while striking out 12 times. Over the past two games, they've now struck out a total of 30 times, which ties a franchise record.

- With that loss, the Yankees officially suffered their worst month of July in franchise history, finishing with a record of 10-15. Despite that, they still sit just 3.5 games out of an AL Wild Card spot the day before the trade deadline.
