The Yankees' initial 60-man player pool for the 2020 MLB season contained only 58 players, giving them only a little wiggle room to add more players soon and/or or down the road.

Per MLB rules, players on the existing 40-man roster do not need to be included in the 60-man player pool, and pool players don't need to be added to the 40-man roster unless they are added to the active roster during the season.

If a player is added to and then removed from the 60-man player pool (for a reason other than injury, suspension, paternity leave, etc.) he cannot be added back on, with teams also running the risk of losing that player to another team.

In other words, teams need to be careful about which players they place on the roster during a season when lots of roster turnover between the majors and pool players might be likely.

For the Yankees, there are some notable prospects who were on their initial 60-man player pool list who could make an impact this season...

RHP Deivi Garcia

While the Yankees are expected to enter the season with a starting rotation of Gerrit Cole, James Paxton, Masahiro Tanaka, J.A. Happ, and perhaps Jordan Montgomery, they have an impressive group of young pitchers (including Garcia and the three listed below) who could make an impact this season either in the rotation or in relief.

Garcia, 21, opened eyes early last season but struggled upon reaching Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Garcia had a 5.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 40 innings in Triple-A as his strikeout rate tumbled.

But he has lights-out stuff and is still expected to be an impact pitcher.

RHP Clarke Schmidt

Schmidt was the talk of spring training in February and March, but was still believed to be on the outside looking in when it came to a spot on the roster.

The 23-year-old has thrown just 19 innings above A-ball (he had a dominant stretch in Double-A Trenton last season). But all bets could be off this season as the 60-game sprint changes how most teams operate.

RHP Michael King

Like Garcia and Schmidt, King profiles as a potential key piece for the Yanks down the road. Unlike Garcia and Schmidt, King has already made his big league debut.

Already 25 years old, King has experience as a starter and reliever.

RHP Albert Abreu

A top-100 prospect before the 2018 season, the 24-year-old Abreu has seen his stock tumble over the last few seasons as he's struggled to match his stuff to his results in the minors. But he still has an electric arm.

Abreu had a 5.20 ERA across four levels in 2018 and a 4.28 ERA in 96.2 innings in Double-A Trenton in 2019.

OF Estevan Florial

Like Abreu, Florial has seen his stock dip recently. He was solid across three levels in 2018, but had a disastrous 2019 season. Florial has also not yet played above A-ball.

But the Yanks only have eight outfielders on their 60-man roster, which means things could potentially get a little weird.

RHP Albert Abreu
