Our weekly minor league report canvases the Yankees farm system, providing updates about the status of the teams in action and the organization's top prospects.
Notes: Top-30 prospect rankings (via MLBPipeline.com) are club based with overall MLB ranks, if applicable, in parenthesis. Prospects currently in the major leagues will not be covered here. Team records and statistics are through games played July 26, 2018, unless otherwise noted.
Top 10 prospects
No. 1 (No. 28) -- Justus Sheffield (LHP) -- Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre -- ETA 2018
Sheffield glides to the top of the Yankees' prospect list, and deservedly so. Sheffield continues to be mentioned as a player that might be close to making his major league debut. His 2.44 ERA in 62 2/3 innings with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has confirmed the Yankees were adept in grabbing the left-hander after headliner Clint Frazier in the trade of Andrew Miller back in 2016.
No. 2 (No. 47) -- Estevan Florial (OF) -- High-A Tampa -- ETA 2020
Florial busted out of a mini slump Thursday, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Florial's season has been defined by injury, which kept him out for a couple of months. However, his overall perfor-mance in Tampa this season has been mostly disappointing, as he's posted just a .661 OPS across 43 games.
No. 3 (No. 77) -- Jonathan Loaisiga (RHP) -- Triple-A -- ETA 2018
Loaisiga, who is currently on the seven-day disabled list, made a dramatic and very useful jump from Double-A to the big leagues earlier this season and his ascent to the No. 3 spot in this list-ing and a position in MLB Pipeline's top 100 is equally as impressive. The Yankees turned some eyes when they added Loaisiga to the 40-man roster before last December's Rule-5 draft, but is it clear that they made an excellent call.
No. 4 (No. 79) -- Albert Abreu (RHP) -- High-A Tampa -- ETA 2020
Abreu is on the seven-day disabled list with an undisclosed injury. It is the second DL stint for Abreu this season. Abreu has thrown just 48 1/3 innings this season, sporting a 4.28 ERA with batters hitting just .228 off him.
No. 5 -- Domingo Acevedo (RHP) -- Double-A Trenton -- ETA 2019
Acevedo made a brief cameo in the Bronx since the last report, but never made a trip to the mound in his one-day stay. Acevedo seems to be fully built up now after some time on the disabled list earlier this season, hurling seven innings in his most recent start. Acevedo owns a 2.97 ERA with Trenton across 57 2/3 innings.
No. 6 -- Anthony Seigler (C) -- Rookie GCL Yankees West -- ETA 2022
Seigler was the Yankees' first-round pick in June's first-year player draft. Seigler, 19, is a switch-hitting catcher that also has had success as a switch pitcher. As fun as the notion of Seigler catching and pitching for the Yankees might be, the organization is working him as a catcher. His placement on this list indicates there is plenty of potential for Seigler to make an impact down the road.
No. 7 -- Clarke Schmidt (RHP) -- GCL Yankees West -- ETA 2020
Schmidt was the Yankees' first-round pick in 2017 (No. 16 overall) despite being on the shelf following Tommy John surgery. Schmidt is back on the field having tossed 15 combined innings with the Yankees GCL clubs, compiling a 4.20 ERA with 20 strikeouts and allowing batters just a .211 batting average along the way.
No. 8 -- Trevor Stephan (RHP) -- Double-A Trenton -- ETA 2020
Stephan dazzled earlier in the season with High-A Tampa (1.98 ERA in 41 innings), however he's had a rougher stretch with Trenton. In 47 innings with the Thunder, Stephan possesses a 5.17 ERA and a whopping 1.55 WHIP. Stephan has exhibited good control, striking out 49 while walking just 18 batters.
No. 9 -- Luis Medina (RHP) -- Rookie Pulaski -- ETA 2021
Medina's turned in his best overall effort of the 2018 season on Thursday, pitching four innings of scoreless ball in which he allowed one hit and two walks while striking out five batters. Medina lowered his ERA to 7.45, but has a long way to go toward getting fully back on track after a promising 2017 campaign.
No. 10 -- Matt Sauer (RHP) -- Short-A Staten Island -- ETA 2021
Sauer suffered his worst outing of the year Wednesday, coughing up five runs in five innings. Sauer, 19, maintains a 2.97 ERA, 0.91 WHIP in 36 1/3 innings for the Pizza Rats.
